Biometrics

Fingerprint reader

by Mark Rowe

Biometric access control can be viewed as expensive or complicated to install, with network installation time and readers – but Progeny Access Control say that their P4 system changes all that with their new fingerprint reader.

Unlike other systems, the P4 Controller distributes the fingerprint templates throughout the system, across all connected sites – meaning Progeny can now offer integrated Biometric access control at a low unit cost per door as there is no network duplication!

For data security, actual fingerprints are not stored – the reader converts the fingerprint to a template (similar to a card number), so that users’ fingerprints cannot be stolen. The templates are then stored on the reader, in the controller and in the door’s enterprise software – to prevent access by tampering with or removing the reader. This is also a useful back-up if the controller or reader ever need replacing, the makers add.

As for install, the reader comes with a four wire interface to the P4 Controller and fits a standard UK single gang back box. It has intuitive light and sound feedback and a choice of three enrolment methods: online via a PC, at the reader using the ‘Gesture Sensor’ feature or via a keypad to access the programming features.

Biometrics can now be added to Progeny access control systems using the existing system architecture, making it more accessible for installers and end users the product developers say. The product is designed and made in the UK and backed by the Progeny lifetime warranty.
