Winning apprentices

by Mark Rowe

Skills for Security apprentices Bobby and Carlos Dhunay, from Tel Cam Security Systems, were featured in the August 2015 print issue of Professional Security magazine, for their win in the Engineers of Tomorrow 2015 competition at IFSEC in June. They were joint first with a team from Kings Security, as announced at the Security Excellence Awards at the London Hilton on Park Lane on Wednesday, November 25.

Engineers of Tomorrow annually encourages the development of future talent within the security sector, helping young engineers and apprentices to showcase their skills, and sponsored by IFSEC, the manufacturer CSL DualCom, the inspectorates NSI and SSAIB, and Skills for Security. Apprentices in the security systems sector prove themselves in competition with their peers by undertaking a 90-minute assessment. Participants assess a previously installed intruder alarm system, identify the faults, re-commission the system and then apply any other security and safety measures.

More than 50 apprentices and young engineers took part at the 2015 IFSEC at ExCeL in London in June; the three highest scoring teams on the three days of the show are awarded prizes. The overall winners and their employers were invited to the Security Excellence Awards, and each of the joint first teams were awarded a £1,000 prize. The 2015 winning apprentices are:

1st Bobby and Carlos Dhunay from Tel Cam of west London;
1st Harrison Cooke and Jack Baker from Kings, of Bradford;
3rd Padraig Lennon from NM Fire & Security and Jonny English from H&J Martin, of Northern Ireland.

All of this year’s winners were Level 2 security systems apprentices at the time of the competition and have now gone on to commence their Level 3.

Cousins Carlos and Bobby from Tel Cam were presented their award by CSL MD Simon Banks. They said: “We are extremely happy to have been involved in this award; this would not have been possible without the help of our dads John and Raj who own Tel Cam Security. The Engineers of Tomorrow competition is an amazing learning opportunity which tests our knowledge for intruder alarm systems and we plan on entering this competition again next year as it helps us show our ability. We completed Level 2 of our apprenticeship last year with Skills for Security and their resources and service are excellent. We are currently studying for the Level 3 with Skills for Security and we would definitely recommend this course to other young people as it is a very niche career that carries a lot of potential.”

Their Skills for Security assessor Mark Cunningham, pictured centre, said: “It was wonderful to see how far Bobby and Carlos have progressed with Skills for Security. They first entered the competition last year and performed really well winning one of the heats and since then they have gone from strength to strength. Skills for Security have noticed how hard they both work on site and at college and we are delighted to see them receive their just rewards and hope they will inspire others looking for a career in the security industry.”
