The South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb) responds to 999 calls across Kent, Sussex and Surrey.  SECAmb also provide non-emergency patient transport.

There are more than 3,600 staff based across 65 sites.  The trust plans to roll out vehicle preparation centres, called Make Ready Centres, across the south east region over the next five years. Make Ready Centres are places where specialist teams of staff are employed to clean, restock and maintain the vehicles required to deliver emergency services. This in turn allows the emergency teams to be able to spend more time delivering clinical care as their time is not spent in ensuring the vehicles are fit for service.

Paddock Wood in Kent is one of two central reporting Make Ready Centres. The centre is based in three business units which have been converted to the needs of SECAmb. Part of the refurbishment was the installation of fire alarms and Kent and Sussex Security (KSS) were asked to design and fit this.  An open protocol analogue addressable fire detection and alarm system to category L1 of BS58839:1 2008 was deemed the most suitable solution and was duly installed.

A Morley Dimension 2 loop control panel and 2 repeater units, Apollo XP95 detectors, manual call points, sounders, beacons and interface modules were implemented. The loop wiring was installed on containment provided by the electricians, cable trays at high level were fixed with metal ties where applicable and conduit for drops to low level devices. Cabling was red, soft skinned fire resistant 1.5mm 2 core & earth. Communications between the repeaters were wired in a radial and the same cable was used. This all combined to ensure the entire installation and commissioning was compliant with the recommendations of BS5839:1 2008.

“We were proud to be able to assist SECAmb in the development  of their Make Ready Centre at Paddock Wood,” said Paul Jenner, Sales Project Engineer with KSS. “All fire detection and alarm systems need to be carefully implemented and must be compliant at all stages of the project. By establishing careful parameters at the outset and working cohesively, we completed our installation on time and within budget. We also gained a wider knowledge as the workload the emergency services actually undertake, and we are privileged to be able to assist. Now the 999 fire service is one emergency service they will not have to call!”
