Access Control

RFID reader

by Mark Rowe

Nortech Control Ltd has added Nedap’s latest uPASS Target, an RFID reader, to its product range. It offers long-range identification using the Rain RFID (UHF EPC Gen II) standard and as such fits into Nortech’s range of automatic vehicle identification and parking products, the firm says.

uPASS Target is Nedap’s reply to the demand for UHF readers in applications where vehicles and other moving objects should be identified automatically using passive RFID tags. uPass Target claims a read range of up to 10m (33 ft), for identification of vehicles, people and rolling stock at industrial sites and logistic depots.

Stephen Blackler, MD Nortech said: “Nedap promised their partners and clients that they would actively support the Rain RFID (UHF) standard maintaining their position as a market leading innovator in this arena. Their new uPASS Target offers the performance and functionality that our clients can expect from a modern and high-end RFID reader. One advantage is that it offers an interfacing engine that makes it effortless to integrate with the access control, parking management and other systems that Nedap’s partners offer.”

The reader automatically identifies vehicles and drivers at a travelling speed of up to 200 km/h (125 mph), it is claimed, by using passive UHF radio frequency identification (±900 MHz). Standard features include configurable three colour LED indication, a housing with modern design, support of common industry interfacing standards (IP, Serial, Wiegand), optional connection of second external antenna, a read range limitation option, and reader output formatting. The circular polarized antenna offers orientation freedom when offering tags.
