Support for drone use

by Mark Rowe

A recent survey has suggested that the use of drones for security and commercial purposes is welcomed by the general public. The research, by the ComRes for the Royal Aeronautical Society, questioned British adults on their attitudes towards the growing use of drones, covering both private usage and that of industries and businesses.

Although it has been highlighted that more education and awareness about the use of drones would be needed to reassure non-experts in the industry, 46pc agree that drones could make a significant contribution to the UK economy and society. Specific applications were favoured, with many supporting drone use for emergency response (91pc), environmental conservation (86pc), police surveillance (85pc), and infrastructure management (81pc).

Will Coldwell, Commercial Director at ConsortiQ said: “Like with any new innovation or invention, there is an element of fear and ‘delving into the unknown’ when thinking about the future implications of this technology once it is widely adopted. As drones become more commonly used for both personal and industrial use however, this survey comes at an important time, and the results are certainly interesting.

“Seeing good levels of support for drone use within particular commercial applications such as for the emergency services and infrastructure management is very reassuring. These industries are benefiting greatly from the increased flexibility and safety that drones can add to their services, and this public opinion can only drive use of, and innovation with drones to expand.”
