Safe station

by Mark Rowe

Higham station has received an award for station safety and security.

The award, part of the Secure Stations Scheme managed by the Department for Transport and British Transport Police, is in recognition of work towards a safe environment for passengers and staff when using the station.

Barbara Thomas, passenger services director for Southeastern said: “This award shows our commitment at Southeastern to provide a secure and safe environment for our passengers. Together with the British Transport Police, we’ve been successful in deterring crime and anti social behaviour on our trains and stations right across our network, so we’re pleased to be recognised with this award,” she said.

The award was presented to station staff on Tuesday, September 10, by Adam Holloway MP for Gravesham. The awards are made by the Department for Transport on the recommendation of the British Transport Police.

To achieve an award, the train operator must demonstrate:
– That crime at the station is low
– That measures including CCTV, adequate lighting and the deployment of enforcement staff are in place to deter crime
– That staff have conflict management knowledge
– That staff work in partnership with the BTP and county police forces
– That in an independently conducted survey, passengers actually feel safer when at the station.

Adam Holloway said: “I am delighted that Higham station has been awarded Secure Station accreditation by the Department for Transport. This award recognises the priority given by Southeastern to the safety of passengers and staff. “

Background
