Parking project

by Mark Rowe

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has launched the initial phase of a Smart Parking Project covering controlled parking at Al-Rigga and the World Trade Center areas. This project by Energy International Corporation, of Dubai, uses the smart parking sensors of Nedap, a Dutch vehicle detection product company, in Al-Rigga Area to provide real-time parking data.

The RTA is responsible for planning and providing the requirements of transport, roads and traffic in the emirate. The project is part of an effort to provide smart services to residents and visitors; a new service whereby information about the number of available parking spaces in on-street and off-street public parking areas is provided using dynamic message signs and RTA smart phone app. Nedap’s SENSIT, the smart parking software, provides details of individual parking spaces in real-time.

Nedap’s SENSIT consists of smart parking sensors which detect the vehicle occupancy status and duration of parking events at parking spaces. These sensors use dual-detection, combined magnetic and infrared technology, for the most accurate vehicle detection measuring. This real time occupancy information of sub-zones in Rigga area is displayed in the RTA app. It also allows payment of parking fees without the charge for SMS. The number of available parking spaces are also displayed in Arabic and English on dynamic message signs on the streets.

Motorists visiting the areas no longer need to drive around randomly looking for parking, thus saving time and reducing traffic congestion and pollution.

Engr. Maitha Mohammed Bin Adai, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency says: “The RTA has completed the link of the central system with the basic components of the project in public parking in Dubai as well as multi-level parking terminals and Dubai Mall car parking. Phase I of the link has been completed according to the planned timeline. The RTA has fully completed the project works at Al Rigga following the installation of about 2000 smart parking sensors. The project is tailored to the needs of road users in view of the growing requirement of the public for using effective technological devices in dealing with the parking service. The project assists in providing information about the status of the parking slots to motorists before driving to those areas. It eliminates the traffic congestion resulting from the search for a parking slot.”
