Paris gates

by Mark Rowe

The March 2017 print issue of Professional Security magazine featured the Automated Border Control (ABC) using facial recognition in use at St Pancras International rail station in London, at the French border.

The Vision-Box product, pictured, was last month opened in Paris, by the British Ambassador to France, Lord Llewellyn; and the Director General of Border Force, Sir Charles Montgomery.

Sir Charles said: “As a world-leader in the use of facial recognition, Border Force processes more people using this advanced technology than any other country in the world, helping to secure the border, keep communities and passengers safe and provide legitimate travellers with a first class service. Earlier this year we welcomed the 100 millionth ePassport gate user to the UK and I am very pleased to extend the benefits of this technology to passengers travelling from the Gare du Nord. We are committed to ensuring Border Force has the latest technology available. We spent £67m in the last year alone and will continue this investment.”

Almost 200 ePassport gates are in use at UK airports, since the first at Manchester in 2008. They are open to passengers with electronic passports from France, the UK and the rest of the EU as well as business and leisure travellers from eligible countries that are members of the Registered Traveller service. More planned to enter into service at the UK’s juxtaposed border control at Brussels Midi station later this year.

By the end of 2017, there will be 239 ePassport gates in operation. There are third generation ePassport gates in place at these airports: Gatwick; Manchester; Heathrow; Glasgow; Edinburgh; Stansted; London City; Birmingham; Luton and East Midlands.

Registered Traveller is open to eligible applicants from the following countries.

Asia: Brunei, Hong Kong (must be a Special Administrative Region passport), Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan (you must have a personal ID number on the photo page)

Australasia: Australia, New Zealand

Middle East: Israel

North America: Canada, Mexico, USA

South and Central America: Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay.
