Metal work

British Transport Police has been working with colleagues from Cheshire Police and others agencies to tackle metal theft on the railways, which has also seen thieves target businesses, homes, utilities and even war memorials.

Sergeant Gary Matthews said: “For some time metal has been an attractive proposition for thieves due to the relatively high price of the commodity – and the price they can potentially get for the stolen goods.

“When the thieves target the railway the metal they steal is often vital to the running of the network and its loss can cause extensive delays and cancellations to services. The resulting disruption causes misery for countless passengers who are often left stranded at stations.”

Sgt Matthews added: “We will continue to tackle metal thieves whose criminal activity persists despite them not receiving large sums of money for the commodity they are able to take.

“In reality thieves only receive a small percentage of the value of the metal they take as the dealers who buy the metal will also look to make a profit when they sell the metal on.”

Part of the drive to tackle metal theft has seen BTP officers and colleagues working with scrap metal dealers to educate them about what to look out for when thieves bring metal to their yards.

Sgt Matthews said: “The scrap metal dealers in Cheshire have been receptive to our efforts to reduce metal theft and we will continue to work with the industry to restrict opportunities for thieves to sell on their stolen goods and reduce the overall number of thefts.”
