Industrial control research

by Mark Rowe

Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude formally launched a new Research Institute in December, in Trustworthy Industrial Control Systems.

Established with EPSRC and the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI), and funded by the National Cyber Security Programme, the Institute aims to help build capability in finding ways to protect the industrial technologies that support the UK’s essential services.

Based at Imperial College in London, the Institute will help expand understanding of the threats faced by these control systems (ICS) and find ways to enhance their security. Prof Chris Hankin of Imperial College is the director. The Institute seeks to play a key role in the strategically important area of infrastructure protection, as a focal point for government, industry and academia on ICS research.

Organisers hope it will lead to better sharing of information, issues and mitigation development, by bringing together common community research interests. The Phase 2 call has a closing date of February 13. Applications from industry, as part of an academic research programme, are especially welcome in view of the contribution this should bring to the future direction of the Institute’s work – See more at: http://www.cpni.gov.uk/highlights/Phase-2-Call-Trustworthy-Industrial-Control-Systems/#sthash.FmXoKX5q.dpuf
