Harbour contract

by Mark Rowe

A three-year security contract with Aberdeen Harbour, has gone to Mitie, the facilities management company.

The contract will see Mitie’s Total Security Management business delivering security services at four key areas in the harbour, plus two minibus shuttle services and a dedicated mobile response vehicle.

Mitie says that it was successful in the competitive tender due to its understanding of the client’s needs and the highly regulated maritime sector.

Its specialist transport and aviation division of over 30 personnel will work to Department for Transport standards, and in accordance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.

Aberdeen Harbour is handling around 8,000 vessel arrivals annually and 4.75 million tonnes of cargo valued at about £1.5 billion for a range of industries. As one of the busiest trust ports in the UK (not a private business nor owned by a council, but run by an independent board), it’s the centre of activity for the offshore oil and gas industry’s marine support operations in Northwest Europe; it is also the principal commercial port in northern Scotland and a port for general cargo, roll-on/roll-off and container traffic. The port is a marshalling point for exports of oilfield equipment.

Jason Towse, Managing Director of Mitie’s Total Security Management business, said: “I am delighted to be working with Aberdeen Harbour in delivering a partnership to keep this critical port safe and operational. We have significant experience in delivering highly skilled personnel in these regulated environments and understand the requirements to deliver the specialist security service.”
