Glasgow ops centre video wall

by Mark Rowe

Traffic cameras and community safety cameras are being used together in Glasgow for the first time in a new control centre ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

The Glasgow Operations Centre (GOC) has been opened after Eyevis UK Ltd installed a £1m video wall for use by control centre operators.

The company, which has bases in London, Manchester and Lancashire, provides video wall displays and audio visuals to such sectors as CCTV, security and traffic control.

The video wall system comprises 85 55-inch industrial LCD displays in a range of video wall configurations and 11 video wall controllers, which show live streams from 440 CCTV cameras around Glasgow city centre.

The operations centre has pooled the city’s community safety and traffic cameras, so traffic controllers can access live and recorded CCTV footage from the public space community safety CCTV, and vice versa.

The facility brings together Community Safety Glasgow’s (CSG) CCTV operation and Traffcom – the Glasgow City Council team which monitors the city’s road network including traffic lights and traffic cameras. CSG and Traffcom have joint access to the city’s CCTV footage.

Eyevis UK managing director Steve Murphy is pictured in the ops centre. He said the work highlighted how valuable video wall technology is in providing updates to control room staff. He said: “The centre monitors hundreds of CCTV camera images and other important data to provide real time information to the operations personnel, allowing the planning of quicker corrective actions.

“Multiple display angles, task sharing and intelligent display solutions with control features such as alarm management all lead to shorter response times and fast troubleshooting in emergency situations. Used on a management level they can also help to provide vast amounts of precise data and information at a glance, which helps in making quick and efficient decisions.”
