City & Guilds accreditation

by Mark Rowe

Maritime Asset Security and Training (MAST) Ltd has gained City & Guilds accreditation for its Maritime Security Operatives (MSO) course.

The accreditation enables MAST to accept MoD learning credits for UK armed forces people taking part in lifelong learning, and to offer a recognised qualification for other security personnel doing the training. MAST adds that it’s the first international company to attain this accreditation and the first to do so in Malta.

The City & Guilds accreditation is the latest in a number of investments and developments that MAST has made to its growing training operations on the island. The company employs more than 100 people in Malta and Gozo and is expanding the services it offers.

MAST opened a new firing range on Gozo in May and has recruited former UK armed forces people to develop and run training courses in maritime security and is now running training including: ‘Ship Security Officer’, ‘Company Security Officer’, ‘Port Facility Security Officer’, ‘Counter Piracy’ and ‘Close Protection’.

MAST says it’s invested in gaining accreditation for its operations and for working to improve professional standards for Private Maritime Security Companies (PSMCs) since its establishment in 2005.

The latest accreditation follows MAST’s work with Fenech & Fenech Advocates, and the Maltese Government to help develop a licencing regime for PMSCs in Malta. MAST has SAMI, SCEG, IMCA, ADC, ISO9001 and ISO14001 accreditation for its operations.

Philip Cable, CEO MAST said: “We are delighted to have gained City & Guilds accreditation for our Maritime Security Operatives course, which means we are now accredited to offer training programmes to UK armed forces personal using MoD learning credits, and to security teams looking to gain an internationally recognised qualification.

“This latest development follows the opening of our new firing range in Gozo which has added further facilities and space to our training centre and enables us to accommodate more people within the courses we run. We are seeing growing interest and enquiries from maritime security companies and operatives, shipping groups and governments for the specialist security training that we are able to offer and our locations in Ta’ Xbiex and Gozo.”
