Anti-bribery standard

by Mark Rowe

Network Rail Consulting Ltd, a subsidiary of Network Rail, has achieved certification to BS 10500:2011 for anti-bribery best practice.

BS 10500:2011 is the Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS) standard developed by the British Standards Institution (BSI) in response to the UK Bribery Act 2010, which became law in July 2011. The legislation prohibits bribery and failing to prevent bribery by associates. Among the strictest anti-bribery legislation in the world, it applies to UK companies wherever they operate.

Network Rail Consulting Ltd says that certification gives assurance to its clients, partners and stakeholders that in place is an effective, robust anti-bribery management system, for good governance. Nigel Ash, managing director of Networking Rail Consulting, said: “We are immensely proud of our rail engineering heritage and success in improving Britain’s railway. We are now exporting this knowledge around the world. The way we do business – which is always with integrity and honesty – is hugely important. Our reputation is built by all of us doing the right thing every day – and preventing bribery is an important part of that. Achieving certification to BS 10500 is a clear statement to our clients and stakeholders about the way we work, and sets out our expectations of our people and business partners.”

About the standard

BS 10500 outlines a systematic approach to managing bribery that encourages you to routinely monitor and improve your controls in proportion to the risks you face. Bribery is defined as the offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of something of value for the purpose of influencing the action of an official in the discharge of his or her public or legal duties. A bribe can consist of immediate cash or of personal favours, a promise of later payment, or anything else the recipient views as valuable. For more about the standard visit the BSI website.
