Risk assessment

by Mark Rowe

A new electronic service which lets contractors and maintenance teams create, amend, store and print activity-based risk assessment (RAs), with method statements (MSs) and construction phase plans (CPPs), is now available on the open market.

The ‘eRAMS’ service has been released by CHAS, the health and safety accreditation, as part of an Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) and CHAS partnership that aims to support effective health and safety management in contracting and other organisations. The new service follows extensive consultation and field testing with hundreds of contracting companies and clients.

eRAMS aids customers with creating key health and safety documents, whether for internal use, or to meet the requirements of client or assessment schemes. The service is suitable for a wide range of contracting and maintenance activity. eRAMS features include:

– RA, MS and CPP e-templates
– Activity-based risk assessments – for a wide range of contractor and maintenance activities
– ‘Auto text’ option, to help users provide essential RA information
– Choice of (numerical) risk RA matrices
– Facility for adding company logos to printed RAs; and
– Facility for uploading useful pictures in support of both RAs and MSs.

Paul Reeve, ECA Director of Business Services, says: “eRAMS is designed to deliver fast, flexible activity-based risk assessments and method statements for all sorts of contracting and maintenance activity. It comes with a ‘quick start guide’ which allows users to start producing practically useful documents within minutes.”

And Darren Price, Director of West Midlands-based contractor and ECA member Goodwin and Price, adds: “eRAMS is remarkably user-friendly, and a number of clients have told us that our risk assessments and method statements are some of the best that they have seen from a contractor.”

eRAMS is free to ECA members, while for non-members, prices range from around £100 to £375 a year (depending on company size/CHAS affiliation). Prices are available on request via www.chas.co.uk/our-services/membership-services.
