Rio concerns

by Mark Rowe

With less than two weeks until the Olympic Games begin in Rio de Janeiro, there continue to be serious concerns around the security for the event, says a risk management consultancy in a briefing.

The build up to the Games has been dominated by political uncertainty and protests created by the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff, the economic downturn gripping the country and the Zika epidemic. Last week, Brazilian police arrested a group of ten from across the country who were planning to commit acts of terror at the Games. Despite all this, Brazil’s experience of hosting the 2014 football World Cup and Rio’s well established status as a centre for tourism mean that with adequate understanding of the security environment and appropriate risk management techniques, a visit to Rio should not necessarily present any serious issues, according to PGI.
