by Mark Rowe

The business group London First runs invitation-only monthly breakfast briefings on security and resilience in the capital.

The next dates and topics are: January 21 – ebola and panedmic flu, sponsored by Prudential Plc; February 12, cyber fraud, sponsored by the City of London Corporation, where speakers include David Hicks, head of forensics at the audit firm KPMG; and March 19, climate change. To ask for an invite contact Robert Hall, director of the security and resilience programme at London First: email [email protected].

On May 14, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, Met Police Commissioner, is invited to speak on ‘policing in a digital age’.

At the December meeting offering forecasts, speakers were Prof Michael Clarke, Director General of the Royal United Services Institute; Lord Hannay of Chiswick GCMG CH, Chair of the All Party Group on Global Security and Non-Proliferation; Keith Bristow QPM, Director General, National Crime Agency; and Niall MacGinnis, Group Security Director, Diageo; chaired by Con Coughlin, Defence Correspondent, The Daily Telegraph.

For instance, organisers point out that the Ebola outbreak in west Africa are having repercussions in more distant countries as medical staff and travellers return home. At the same time, the ongoing but so far isolated bird flu outbreaks in various countries provide a reminder of the previous incidents of viral transmission to humans and the impact on business. Hence, it is timely that organisations based in London look carefully at the issues surrounding the spread of these deadly diseases and consider their advice to travellers, insurance provision and actions should staff became casualties. Speakers invited are:

Deborah Turbitt, ‎Consultant in Communicable Disease Control, Public Health England;
Olly Morton, Operations Director, SecureBio Ltd; and
Caroline Woolley, EMEA Risk and Property Practice Leader and Business Interruption Centre of Excellence Global Leader, Marsh Ltd.
