IT security companies certified

by Mark Rowe

Five IT security companies have become certified under the UK Government Cyber Incident Response (CIR) scheme, to deal with what the Government terms sophisticated, targeted attacks against networks of national significance. For the list visit the CESG (Government information assurance authority) website – http://www.cesg.gov.uk/servicecatalogue/cir/Pages/Cyber-Incident-Response-providers.aspx

The five are Detica, part of BAE Systems; Context; Mandiant, MWR and Dell SecureWorks.

About the CIR scheme

Briefly, CIR has been developed to protect UK businesses from cyber threats and to provide guidance as to which IT security firms companies can turn to for help, should they be attacked. The aim; to make the UK more resilient to cyber-attacks, and to help businesses recover quickly and with minimum disruption should they suffer an attack.

Incident response provides containment of cyber threats, ensuring that a breach impacts a small part of an organisation whenever possible. Once the threat has been eradicated, those responsible for security need to ensure that the business is properly planning against threats.

According to Dell SecureWorks, the CIR scheme is a model for governments worldwide because of the advice and support it will offer organisations in preparing to prevent and responding to cyber-attacks. It has been developed with and is certified by the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) and CESG.

What they say

Don Smith, director of technology, Dell SecureWorks, said: “Over the last 18 months, Dell SecureWorks have been actively engaged with the CPNI/CESG in responding to serious security incidents, and we are delighted to have this relationship formalised. This is an excellent example of the government working with the private sector to provide organisations with much-needed assistance in a critical area for modern-day enterprises; cyber security. Even in mature IT environments, when faced with advanced and targeted attacks, organisations often require an extra level of assistance and expertise. That is where CIR certified security vendors, such as Dell SecureWorks, will come in.” Visit www.secureworks.co.uk/cir
