Human factors in control rooms

by Mark Rowe

More in the February 2014 print issue of Professional Security magazine; a best practice guide about human factors in CCTV control rooms has been published, by the official security advice body CPNI (Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure).

This free to download document covers physical and people security, and goes over the principles of the design and running of CCTV control rooms. CPNI say the guidance is on how to investigate and resolve human factors issues to create a control room that is designed to support the activities of the control room operators and ensure effective CCTV.

There are also human factors checklists that can be used by external assessors (for example, CTSAs (police counter terror security advisers) or security consultants with responsibility for advising the site) in order to provide advice to site security managers.

Or, CPNI suggest internal security managers can use the HF Checklist to provide a snapshot of HF issues relating to their own CCTV control room. You can download the 41-page guidance, and accompanying checklist from the CPNI website.

The checklist looks into workloads, shift patterns, roles and staff welfare and attitudes.
