Hikvision roadshow in Birmingham

by Mark Rowe

Some 80 installers and others attended CCTV manufacturer Hikvision‘s first 2016 UK roadshow, at Birmingham. The Chinese firm is running the morning shows – other dates are London on March 3, Manchester on March 8, Newcastle on March 10 and Belfast on March 15 – with its UK distributors DVS; ezcctv.com; Dynamic CCTV Ltd; and Eurocables, the Belfast-based network and security product distributor. Dave Davies, technical manager at DVS, gave a presentation on Hikvision’s LPR (licence plate recognition) products; otherwise, Hikvision UK staff talked the audience through the company’s present and upcoming products; Steve Norman, Midlands business development manager; pre-sales technical engineer Peter Ma; and Mike Tolley and Chris Acton.

Visitors that Professional Security spoke to found the event informative. Konrad Rubery, of Stoke-on-Trent-based installer JPR Fire & Security said that he was particularly interested in the LPR as a couple of customers had been asking about number plate recognition – one for opening of a barrier for lorries; and a hospital seeking to log number plates of cars going in and out the site. And Andy Stevenson, business development manager of the Nottingham-based monitoring station RVR (Remote Video Response) was interested in what technology’s being used, and his firm’s capability of monitoring it.

In his talk, Mike Tolley, Pre-Sales Director at Hikvision UK, stressed how the company is engineering-led. He showed a ‘before and after’ image of Eccles town centre, part of Salford City Council’s use of analogue cameras and then the Darkfighter from Hikvision; featured in the January 2016 print issue of Professional Security magazine. As Mike said, purely on the resolution and the imaging chip, you would have seen an improvement in the scene, thanks to the IP camera; but the difference from one day to the next was so great that Salford council staff wondered if the area recorded had had its lighting upgraded. Some of the company’s products coming soon and to be shown in more detail at IFSEC in London in June were thermal cameras; multi-sensor cameras offering 180 and 360 degree views, the PanoVu; new pan and tilt infra-red bullet cameras (while quite traditional, offered as a design style as an option to domes, as an overt camera); new positioning system cameras; specialised products such as anti-corrosion cameras; and more in the Darkfighter and Lightfighter camera ranges.
