Glevum visited

by Mark Rowe

Life has been whirlwind of events for Glevum Security of Gloucester over recent weeks. The company has had a visit from a Government minister and won an award.

Employment minister Mark Hoban dropped in on Glevum’s training academy for door supervisors and security operatives, on the outskirts of the city.

Mr Hoban was in town as the guest of Gloucester MP Richard Graham. At Glevum he met directors Mark Baker and Steve Barnett and HR and training manager Derek Martin. Pictured are Mark Hoban and Glevum co-director Mark Baker in the control room.

Mr Hoban said: “I am very impressed with what I have seen here today. For training, Glevum is definitely the gold standard.” Derek Martin, who is responsible for the company`s Training Academy, said: “Having the minister visiting us here was fantastic. He was obviously interested to see how our training academy works. We are very proud of the work we do here. We take people out of unemployment, give them new skills in order to make them more employable and hopefully find new careers in our industry.

“We have a very high success rate working with people of all abilities and all ages and have trained about 1,000 people over the last three years – not just for us but also other security companies who for whatever reason don’t have their own training facilities. Our main objective is to help people to get back into employment.”

Glevum also recently won the first Forwards Work Clubs Employer Award which recognises employers who have shown commitment, innovation and practical support for people with learning disabilities. The award was presented to Glevum co-director Steve Barnett by Gloucester rugby player Jimmy Cowan at a ‘Showcase’ event at Gloucester Rugby Club, to highlight the work of Forwards Works Clubs in getting adults with learning disabilities into work.

Glevum won the best private sector employer award and Gloucester City Homes won the best public sector employer award.

Steve Barnett said: “It was a humbling experience to receive such an award. As a company we believe strongly that everybody deserves a job and an opportunity to reach their true potential; we should all see past the disability and see the person.”

Organiser, employment commissioner, Vikki Walters said: “We intend to make these awards annually now as a tribute to companies who lead the way in fighting the prejudice and lack of understanding people with learning disabilities have to face every day. Glevum Security has always been very supportive of our work and they fully deserve this recognition.”
