Extra modules are the main event

by Mark Rowe

The crowd management and event security contractor Showsec reports that it’s completed an exercise whereby their entire workforce has now acquired new and improved levels of initial training. More than 90pc of the workers responded to a new company requirement stipulating that they will only be eligible for work if they have completed all six of the Mandatory Training Modules.

While newcomers to the firm have had to follow this new induction process since the end of the summer of 2014, existing workers have been tasked with undertaking any outstanding modules.

“An essential part of trying to raise standards of service is ensuring all workers reach the same level with their initial training,” said Keith Hackett, Learning and Development Manager.

“While it has always been a requirement that newcomers complete a certain amount of basic training as part of their induction, the fact that we have now introduced these six Mandatory Modules means that this improved training has taken it to an even higher level. With more than 3500 casual workers on our books, this has been a massive commitment on the part of the Company’s Training Department, but we are delighted with the response.

“This puts us in a much stronger position, both as a business and as individuals, to meet the challenges and issues which present themselves in going about day-to-day duties. The benefit will be felt by our clients and members of the public because this will ensure that we achieve greater consistency in the delivery of our services across the board. But it will also benefit our workers as well because this provides them with the best possible starting point if they decide in the future to pursue a career in the security industry.”

The contractor works at outdoor festivals such as Bestival and Download at Donington Park, pictured; and indoor concert arenas. The six Mandatory Training Modules which newcomers to the contractor now have to complete before they work their first shift are:

*Ingress and Egress of the Public at Events

*Emergency Aid at Events

*Manual Handling

*Customer Service and Customer Service Skills

*Counter Terrorism at Events

*Health and Safety Level 2

While these are all very specific areas of training, the process is helped by the fact that all of the modules can be completed online, the Leicester-based contractor points out.

“The company developed an e-Learning platform in conjunction with the University of Derby Corporate five years ago and this has enabled us to purpose build modules which enhance the skills level of our workforce,” said Hackett.

“This not only minimises the training costs to the Company, it also means that workers can undertake the modules at their leisure.”
