Engineers of Tomorrow winners

by Mark Rowe

Skills for Security apprentices Bobby and Carlos Dhunay, from Tel Cam Security Systems, were day one winners of the Engineers of Tomorrow 2016 competition heats on the Tuesday, June 21, of IFSEC.

Engineers of Tomorrow is an annual competition during IFSEC that seeks to encourage the development of future talent within the security sector, helping young engineers and apprentices to showcase their skills.

Sponsored by IFSEC, CSL DualCom, NSI, SSAIB and Skills for Security, the 2016 competition saw a record number of applications; 64 young engineers were competing over the three days at the show. There they undertook a 90-minute assessment. Participants assessed a previously installed intruder alarm system, identified the faults, re-commissioned the system and then applied any additional security and safety measures.

Competing in pairs, the first group of the 64 took part on day one and at the end of the day the scores were calculated and Bobby and Carlos were announced winners of the first heat. They were also winners last year.

Winners from each day and their employers will be invited to the Security Excellence Awards, where the Engineer of Tomorrow 2016 overall winners will be announced.

Skills for Security engagement manager, Derek Jones who has been training cousins Bobby and Carlos said: “Bobby and Carlos have progressed greatly since their training started at Skills for Security and they are now on the level 3 Security Systems apprenticeship fast track. This is the third year they have entered the competition and we are thoroughly proud of their achievement. They both work hard, are committed and their knowledge is ever increasing. They are both fantastic engineers with bright futures ahead and their level has been shown here at Engineers of Tomorrow.”
