Door training reminder

by Mark Rowe

Door supervisors are being reminded that they may need to take additional training if they plan to renew their Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence.

From February 4, all door supervisors with a qualification obtained before summer 2010 will need to pass the new ‘Up-Skilling for Door Supervisors’ award before they are able to renew their SIA licence.

Tony Holyland, Development Manager (Competency) at the regulator said: “In the interest of public safety, additional training, which includes physical intervention, will be a compulsory requirement for anyone who has not already completed it when they renew their licence.

“Being trained in the appropriate techniques and how to use them will help door staff to manage difficult situations, minimising the risk of injury to members of the public and to themselves. Reminder letters are being sent to door supervisors whose licences are up for renewal and we encourage those requiring additional training to ensure they have obtained the qualifications.”

The SIA adds that the Up-Skilling for Door Supervisors award is available from training providers already offering the licence-linked door qualification. The award includes physical intervention skills, first aid awareness, awareness of terrorist threats and considerations in dealing with children and young people. It consists of one day of training and some self-study. For a list of training providers – visit: www.sia.homeoffice.gov.uk/trainers

Only door supervisors with older pre-June 2010 qualifications will need to take the new award, as the content is included in the newer qualification since June 2010. Since then, a stand-alone physical intervention unit has been available for door supervisors with the older qualifications if they wished to undertake this element. Any door supervisor with the older qualification that have already done the extra physical intervention training will not need to repeat this, but will need to complete the self-study workbook and have it signed by a tutor. Anyone who holds a door supervisor licence but does not carry out licensable activities in this sector can, after February 4, 2013, on renewal of their licence obtain instead a security guarding licence and will not have to take the additional training. This can be done by an individual stating on the renewal form that they are applying for a security guarding licence.
