Apprenticeship accolade

by Mark Rowe

The Scottish installer, Cumbernauld-based VWS, has gained Investors in Young People accreditation, for commitment to apprenticeships across the company.

VWS, which can lay claim to 31 years experience in the fields of networked CCTV, fire detection and security, says that it’s made the development, training and promotion of young people a central plank of its five year plan for growth and diversification.

Investors in Young People Scotland is a UK framework for business improvement through people management, and offers a evaluation and review process to companies of all sizes. VWS, which has 36 staff, says it’s committed to promoting from within wherever possible and fully half its workforce comprises young people or managers and influencers of young people.

Business Development Director at VWS, Graham McMonigle, said: “In the past, we’ve had difficulty finding the right quality of people to hire, so we made a commitment some years ago to ‘grow our own’. We encourage work experience and apprenticeship so enthusiasm can be translated into skills. We want to see the business grow in the long term and having enthusiastic, committed and driven young people at every level is our way of not just giving back, but making sure the future looks that bit brighter.”

Business apprentice, Jack McGinley is being mentored in a series of related disciplines by a senior manager and being supported to achieve his SVQ level 2 in Business Administration. Pictured left to right are Scott Mckenzie, Technical Manager, with Jack McGinley.

Tom Hutchison, Contracted Lead Specialist with Investors in People Scotland, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to VWS. There’s absolutely no doubt that young people are a vital part of its business strategy, and the youngsters I spoke to all recommended VWS as an excellent place to learn and develop.”

VWS is also engaged with New College Lanarkshire and the You Train Modern Apprentice programme, giving young people avenues of entry to the company. Visit: www.vwsip.co.uk.
