Police under cover have been sent onto the streets of Wakefield District to tackle street level crime: drugs dealers, thieves and anti social drinkers following the first in a series of operations. Local Patrol and Neighbourhood Policing Team officers in plain clothes and uniform took to the city centre and Crofton and Cromwell Crescent in Pontefract for a series of planned operations on Thursday, July 26.

In Wakefield city centre West Yorkshire Police officers on patrol arrested a suspect for a shoplifting, another for criminal damage and another for breach of the peace.

Proactive patrols were also maintained throughout the day and officers also gained fresh intelligence from shop keepers and residents about issues in the area.

Meanwhile in Pontefract Police executed a warrant on Cromwell Crescent and recovered a quantity of cannabis.

Disruption visits were also made to known offenders in Normanton to warn them they were being watched, while another suspect, who was wanted on warrant was arrested.

Acting Sergeant Jonathan Sewell of Patrol Team One, who organised the operation, said: “Days of Action are extremely effective ways for us to target resources in certain areas and give criminals a reminder that we really do mean business.

“We are pleased with the results of this operation and received some very good feedback from retailers and residents who appreciated seeing their local officers out in force.

“Anti social street drinkers and shoplifters are among those who cause the most misery to residents on a day to day basis and they should be warned we will look to stage similar operations in the near future.”

And Supt Pat Casserly of Wakefield District Police, said: “Offenders should be aware that plain clothes officers will remain on our streets and we are constantly following up new leads to target those who think they can act in a way which causes misery to others. Wakefield is one of the safest places to live in West Yorkshire and we continue to ask for residents’ assistance to help us keep targeting offenders.”
