Shopper saved

by Mark Rowe

A security supervisor has been recognised for his quick thinking that potentially saved the life of a shopper.

Mercury Security’s William Moran, working at CastleCourt in Belfast city centre, was working in the shopping centre’s control room last month when he received a report from Debenhams that a man had collapsed outside its entrance on the upper mall.

Belfast man William grabbed the HeartStart defibrillator and made his way to the scene, where a nurse had begun cardiovascular resuscitation on a male believed to be in his mid-50s.

The patient was not responding so the defibrillator pads were placed on the male and an electric shock administered. The male responded and William continued to assist with first aid until a paramedic arrived.

CastleCourt Security Manager Stewart McConnell strongly believes that the speed of William’s response saved the life of the patient who is now out of hospital and recovering well. Mr McConnell said: “The excellent response by William to this medical emergency cannot be overstated. “In fact I have no doubt that his actions saved the life of the man concerned. Our security operation at CastleCourt is very much customer-focussed so, on behalf of everyone at the shopping centre, I’d like to thank William for the crucial role he played in the survival of one of our customers and I’m delighted that he is getting the recognition that his actions undoubtedly deserve,” he added.

Mercury director Liam Cullen said: “At Mercury we pride ourselves on the excellent standards of security we have maintained over the years and William’s actions in this instance are an example to everyone in terms of knowledge of the job and speed of response.

“It’s one thing knowing how to do your job but the ability to keep your head, remain calm and carry out your duties in a reliable and effective manner is crucial in this business. These skills could not be demonstrated any better than William did on this occasion and we are extremely proud to have him on our team,” added Mr Cullen.

In recognition of his actions, William received a certificate of excellence and a voucher from his employer Mercury, which was presented at CastleCourt.

Mercury was appointed by CastleCourt last year to look after its security requirements which, with an annual footfall of 14 million customers and over one million vehicles using the centre every year, is one of the biggest in Northern Ireland’s retail industry.

Founded in 2001, Mercury operates out of offices in Lisburn, London and the Republic of Ireland and offers a range of services including CCTV remote monitoring, manned guarding and concierge services, key-holding and alarm response, satellite-tracked mobile patrols, staff and vehicle escort services, lone worker monitoring, vehicle and asset tracking, approved and accredited training.
