Going Digital

Electronics and communications company Agilent Technologies has streamlined their UK security.

Electronics and communications company Agilent Technologies has streamlined their UK security at South Queensferry and Dunfermline. Glasgow-based installer McDougal Systems recommended System Sprite from Dedicated Micros with the manufacturer?s V-serve 100. Gordon Hayes, Technical Sales Manager at McDougal, says: ?As part of a global security overhaul, in the long term, the system would need to offer upgrade capability to interface with worldwide CCTV monitoring applications from one central monitoring station. Dedicated Micros? System Sprite for alarm and camera control, linked via V-serve to allow image distribution across Agilent?s PC network, was the obvious choice.? Ian McIntosh, Security Manager for UK & Ireland at Agilent says of the digital system: ?We have embarked on a company-wide security facelift and are very pleased with the results from Dedicated Micros. We now carry out security monitoring at South Queensferry for local sites which offers us tighter control advantages. It removes the possibility for security breaches due to tape loss, theft or damage and tampering with the system is not possible. On installation, it became clear that we had made the right choice. System Sprite and V-serve are easy to use and has proved to be a cost effective installation that forms an integral part of our global security monitoring programme.? V-serve is a network video server range that offers a flexible solution to security, Dedicated Micros say, because it allows multiplexed video signals to be quickly and easily streamed over a standard computer network to a user?s desktop PC. A variety of systems can be created with the three System Sprite ?building blocks?: keyboard, multiplexer and monitor switcher. This enables two, three or more individual control points to have shared viewing, recording and control of any number of cameras, so users can extend the capability of their system without having to invest in an expensive and often complicated matrix system. An in-built telemetry joystick provides direct control of a range of coaxial and DTMF receivers for fixed and variable speed pan and tilt units. It also offers full control of the latest market leading high speed domes without the need for an additional telemetry transmitter or controller. McDougal Systems recommended three System Sprites to control ten high speed optically correct domes and seven fixed cameras. The domes have low light day/night (ie colour/mono) cameras for site perimeter surveillance. In addition, a building access control system is in place that routes alarms via the Dedicated Micros C-bus network, triggering preset camera positions to view the alarmed door. Martin Izatt, Engineering Manager at Agilent continues: ?Once we started to look at updating our security system, it rapidly became clear that the latest digital technologies would significantly enhance our surveillance operations. We worked closely with McDougal Systems from the outset and have been delighted with the results from the System Sprite equipment they recommended. We have a team of security guards based at our South Queensferry site ? which covers 580,000 sq. ft. ? who also monitor the 11,00 sq. ft. Dunfermline operation remotely. The key thing about the system from my point of view is that it is very straightforward to use. A couple of months ago, for example, I was at our Dunfermline site when I was asked to review a incident. I have had no training on the System Sprite, but was able to work out how to use it straight away.?
