York City Council’s CCTV operation has been praised following a recent incident which resulted in two men being arrested for drugs offences.
A CCTV operator saw two men in a vehicle in Bootham Row car park who appeared to be injecting themselves with drugs and alerted police to the incident.
Police officers as a result found one man with a syringe in his arm; he was arrested for being in possession of a controlled drug. A further search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of cannabis with a street value of about £300. Since the incident one person has been placed on a drug referral scheme and another has been placed on bail for drugs offences.
Detective Supt Lewis Raw said: "This pro-active use of the CCTV cameras has allowed the police to arrest two people in respect of drug taking in a public place and has led to the recovery of an amount of drugs."
