Suzy Lamplugh Trust appeal

by Mark Rowe

Stalking is terrifying, isolating and insidious – sometimes all a victim wants is to be heard and believed. So says the stalking and workplace safety charity the Suzy Lamplugh Trust. Four in ten of the people who call the National Stalking Helpline can’t get through due to demand.

The National Stalking Helpline responds to nearly 3000 victims of stalking each year. A small team of staff and volunteers provide – by phone and email – information and guidance on the law, how to report stalking, gathering evidence, staying safe and reducing the risk.

One victim said: “I would just like to say many thanks so far for your advice; it is just so good to be believed after five years of hell. Thank you.”

With 40pc of calls going unanswered, there is an urgent need to increase the Helpline’s capacity. The Trust has launched a new fundraising appeal to allow it to reach more victims of stalking. To support the appeal, text ‘HOLD10 £5′ to 70070 to donate £5. Visit http://www.suzylamplugh.org/reach.

The charity makes the point that one in five women and one in ten men will experience stalking at some point in their lives, making stalking one of the most common forms of inter-personal crime.

This year, the Trust’s Carol Concert will be held in aid of the Reach Appeal, at 6.30pm on Thursday, December 11, at All Saints Church in East Sheen.
