SIA chief retiring

by Mark Rowe

The chief executive of the Security Industry Authority Bill Butler is retiring in summer 2015 and the SIA is advertising for his successor. Visit the website of the recruitment consultancy Gatenby Sanderson to apply, by October 13.

A final panel interview will run on December 4. The timing is explained by the long time it takes for public appointments; Bill Butler, pictured, has agreed with the SIA chair, Elizabeth France, that he will stay at the Holborn, London-based regulator until his successor is in post.

The job advert asks for applicants with ‘a successful track record of leadership at Board level in the public or private sector’. As the ad says, the SIA has on its plate what the advert calls ‘a challenging agenda’ including the introduction of business licensing besides individual badging, though it’s stalled since the timetable of applications from businesses accepted from October, six months before business licensing becoming mandatory, was shelved earlier this year; and licensing of the private investigations sector, as announced by Home Secretary Theresa May in summer 2013.

As Bill Butler joined the SIA in July 2009, a six-year stint at the authority would make him by far the longest-serving chief at the SIA, surpassing the first chief John Saunders. Butler, who joined the SIA from another regulator, the Gambling Commission, was among speakers at the Professional Security magazine conference-exhibitions ST14 Bristol in April and ST14 Manchester in July.
