Interviews

ONVIF at Essen

by Mark Rowe

ONVIF, the US-based standardisation initiative for IP-based physical security products, will host an open panel discussion and networking event on Wednesday, September 26 at Security Essen 2012.

Their aim to examine the current state of standardization initiatives on the security industry. The event is part of ONVIF’s ongoing efforts to provide a forum for open dialogue about the implementation of interoperability standards for security technology.

Standardisation efforts in the security industry have made major strides in the market since their introduction four years ago. To discuss ONVIF and overall standardization in the market, Jonas Andersson, Chairman of ONVIF’s Steering Committee, will join a panel of security industry and standards people to discuss the market perception of ONVIF’s standards initiative, examine potential influences and impacts of standards on the market and look ahead to the future of IP interoperability standards deployment.

Andersson will be joined by Frank Rottmann, Robert Bosch, and liaison partner and convener, International Electrotechnical Commission TC 79 ‘CCTV’; René Kiefer, Siemens Building Technologies, and Chairman of the Video Expert Group, ZVEI Industrial Association Security; and Jürgen Alz, Product Management, Security, Bosch Building Security.

The panel discussion will also kick off a broader networking event at Essen where ONVIF will host a display of milestones in its history, having grown from a group of security manufacturers to an industry consortium representing nearly 400 member companies and more than 2,000 products and counting that conform to its interoperability specification. Milestones on display will include the group’s formation in October 2008, the release of Version 2.0 of the ONVIF Core Specification in late 2010, and the release of Profile S one year later.

Profile S will be the focus of ONVIF’s interoperability demonstration at the Essen networking event, where a series of kiosks will display Profile S at work in video and audio streaming, PTZ and relay output control as well as video encoder configuration and multicast.

The panel will be held from 4pm to 5:30 p.m. in CC South, Hall Deutschland of Messe Essen Fairgrounds in Essen, with the interoperability demonstrations and networking event immediately following the discussion.

Further information about ONVIF conformant products, including the vendors and the conformant models, is available on ONVIF’s website: www.onvif.org.
