Manchester round-up

by Mark Rowe

Police and security industry were on hand to provide security advice to North-West based businesses in March, as the annual Manchester Security conference and exhibition returned to the city for the 19th year.

Organised by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) with Greater Manchester Police and the Manchester City Centre Crime Prevention Panel, the event aims to inform businesses based in the region about the various security solutions available to help them tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Organisers report that this year’s conference and exhibition was the best-attended yet, attracting well over 200 delegates, including representatives of well-known retailers Primark, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and Urban Outfitters.

The free event, sponsored by BSIA member company Securitas Security Services, invited local businesses and public sector organisations to view security products and services showcased by 29 exhibitors, ranging from electronic security measures to people-based guarding.

Delegates were also given the opportunity to attend a seminar with a panel of expert speakers, each sharing their own expertise on security issues faced by city-centre businesses. This year’s speakers included Fraser Halliday, Specialist Services Director at Securitas; and from Greater Manchester Police Superintendent Stuart Ellison, who discussed policing in Manchester City Centre, with Chief Superintendent John O’Hare, who gave a talk on preparing policing for a major event.

Professor Martin Gill, Director of Perpetuity Research and Consultancy International Limited, also joined the panel, discussing the future of security.

James Kelly, Chief Executive of the British Security Industry Association, opened the event alongside Tony Morton, Chairman of Manchester City Centre Crime Prevention Panel and Great Manchester Police Assistant Chief Constable, Garry Shewan. After the event, Mr Kelly said: “Whether it be a major event in the city centre, or an ordinary Saturday afternoon, it is absolutely essential that businesses are prepared for any security challenges that they may face.

“The Manchester Security event provides a fantastic opportunity for local businesses to learn about the latest security products and services, whilst hearing about the great work that the Greater Manchester Police do for the city. By working together and sharing best practice advice, we can secure a positive and safe future for local businesses throughout 2013 and beyond.”
