With the final whistle blown on the Euro 2012 football tournament won by Spain, INTERPOL Secretary General Ronald K Noble praised the international teamwork which resulted in a safe and secure football tournament by co-hosts Ukraine and Poland and the wider policing community. During his mission to Ukraine, the Head of INTERPOL visited the EURO 2012 International Police Cooperation Centre in Kiev where an INTERPOL Major Events Support Team (IMEST) had been deployed to provide assistance and support before and throughout the championships.
“While only one country could win EURO 2012, the event has been a success for everyone involved, particularly the co-hosts Ukraine and Poland, which have been the focus of the sporting world in recent weeks,” said Secretary General Noble.
“ I am pleased that INTERPOL could make a contribution in ensuring that spectators and players alike were able to enjoy the championship safely and securely from the opening game all the way through to the final whistle,” added Mr Noble.
A guest of the INTERPOL Secretary General at the EURO 2012 finals was Italian footballer Simone Farina, whose integrity in reporting an attempted match-fixing bribe to police was marked by INTERPOL earlier this year with the presentation of a commemorative medal in Rome, Italy.
