Crime blog

by Mark Rowe

Crimestoppers, the 0800 crime-reporting line charity, has launched a national blog. The charity wants to engage with the public about crimes that impact their lives. The crimes that are being focused on were identified in a survey by Crimestoppers to find out what issues troubled the public. Youth-related crime, online crime and domestic violence topped the poll with over 60 per cent choosing these.

A blog, called Crime Matters, will focus on these key issues and highlight the work being done to fight these and all other crimes in the UK. For example Leicestershire Police says that it works closely with Crimestoppers, as information that comes in from the public can be extremely beneficial for investigations. The Force would strongly encourage those with information relating to a crime or incident to call the anonymous 0800 555 111 number. Around 20 people are arrested and charged every day as a result of information given to Crimestoppers.

Assistant Chief Constable Roger Bannister said: “The Crimestoppers service is an important way of sourcing information. Whilst we have the 101 number, the Crimestoppers number gives people the chance to remain anonymous if they are at all concerned about providing information or don’t wish to speak directly to the police.

“Your help is needed on a number of fronts. For instance, on our website we have CCTV footage, witness appeals and a Tiger Targets gallery of wanted suspects. We would therefore urge anyone with information to call the 0800 555 111 number.”

If you would like to get involved in the blog by providing your views, you can find it at www.blog.crimestoppers-uk.org.

You can comment on the various blog posts and take part in the 2014 Crimestoppers Survey where you can win an iPad Air.
