SIA badge milestone

by Mark Rowe

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has issued its one millionth licence inside ten years.

An application for an unnamed security guard licence through the SIA’s e-Renewals service was accepted and took the overall licence count to one million. The first two were issued in Portsmouth in April 2004, when badges for door staff were rolled out regionally as the SIA bedded in. Door staff and contract security guards (including key-holding and cash in transit) remain the largest categories for the regulator, while other sectors badged are public space CCTV operators under contract, close protection operatives, and (in Northern Ireland only) wheel clampers. Apart from doors, an SIA licence is required only if your services are done under contract to a consumer.

The granting of the licence comes the same week as the SIA launched its new licence application service through the Post Office.

Bill Butler, SIA Chief Executive, said: “This is a great achievement for the SIA and the private security industry as a whole. We’ve seen the industry grow in many ways since regulation began and we hope that with our new licence application process with the Post Office, we will be issuing more licences.”
