Irish monitoring

by Mark Rowe

In the Republic of Ireland, the Private Security Authority (PSA) has gone out to public consultation on its upcoming licensing of CCTV Monitoring contractors. The closing date for responses is Friday, February 7.

The PSA says: “Our aim is to develop a standard which will support the licensing regime and will be relevant to the environment in which CCTV Monitoring contractors operate. The PSA will announce a timeframe for the licensing of CCTV Monitoring contractors when this public consultation concludes.”

The regulator has brought out a discussion paper and invites submissions from interested parties on “A Standard for PSA Licensing – CCTV Monitoring Centres and Alarm Monitoring Centres”

The Tipperary Town-based authority sets out what the requirements of a standard for CCTV Monitoring Centres and Alarm Monitoring Centres might be. The document also includes requirements for contractors licensed in the Security Guard (Monitoring Centre) sector. Submissions, which should be entitled “Public Consultation”, can be sent by email to: [email protected].

The document covers pre-employment screening, premises (offices should have an inturder alarm, remotely monitored by a PSA-licensed alarm monitoring centre), keep records and signed codes of conduct, ‘have a clearly defined, documented training policy’ besides standards.

Briefly, the PSA is the Irish equivalent of the UK’s SIA, and works according to the Private Security Services Act 2004. While much of its work is similar for door staff and cash in transit and security guards, the PSA also badges intruder alarm installers and since 2012 access control and CCTV installers.
