Hate crime project fund

by Mark Rowe

In our September 2016 print issue we featured the Home Office scheme offering places of worship in England and Wales funding for security measures or equipment.

Likewise the Government is offering £25,000 or £50,000 for companies or charities – or consortia (led by a charity or an organisation with a charitable purpose). To apply, your project or organisational has to show how its aims are aligned to one or more of the five aims of the UK Government’s plan for tackling hate crime. For example, you are engaging with victims, or those at risk of being victims of hate crime.

The Home Office defines hate crimes as ‘crimes that are motivated by hostility on the grounds of race (including colour, nationality, ethnicity and national origin), religion, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity’.

The aim of the fund is to work with affected communities to fund projects that:

prevent hate crime
respond to hate crime in our communities
increase the reporting of hate crime
improve support for the victims of hate crime
build our understanding of hate crime

The Home Office is making £300,000 available to spend by the end of March 2017, with project delivery expected in June 2017. The Government says that it expects to fund six to eight projects. For application details, visit the Home Office website.
