School development

by Mark Rowe

Site wide access control, CCTV and intruder alarms have been fitted by installer PEL Services at the re-developed Westbrook Primary School in Hounslow, west London.

The new school building and grounds, costing £10.58m, are home to 665 pupils aged from three to eleven. As protection from unauthorised visitors, while ensuring unhampered pupil and staff access, PEL Services has installed a Paxton Net2 proximity access control system to all perimeter doors and gates (including the barrier protected car-park), the school’s sporting and meeting halls, doors that lead from reception into the school and on IT rooms which house valuable equipment. Some 15 entrances in total are protected; the system has about 100 users. Perimeter entrances also have video door entry, integrated into the access control by PEL.

Westbrook further has HikVision IP networked CCTV, featuring 22 dome day-night vision cameras, installed by PEL to monitor the school’s perimeter and grounds, corridors and reception. Video is recorded 24 hours on to a 16TB storage device and is monitored by the school’s permanent on site manager using his laptop. PEL specified the CCTV as it could use the school’s network rather than requiring its own dedicated network.

Out of hours, the school has a grade three Menvier intruder alarm, featuring the latest addressable control panel. It has been configured by PEL to protect the teaching areas and offices during weekday evenings and site wide coverage at weekends. Open protocol, PC-based systems were considered essential, so that the school is not tied to any manufacturer.

Nathan Brace, Site Manager at Westbrook Primary School, said: “all the security systems in place are great – easy to use and working exactly as they should be. PEL’s support has been really good, from install up”.

Westbrook Primary School has now awarded north London-based PEL the contract to maintain these systems. Visit www.pel.co.uk.
