Active shooter assessment

by Mark Rowe

How do you assess the risk of an active shooter, or spot the signs of a possible shooting,or what’s best for your site – whether school, cinema or sports stadium, or church – if such an incident happens?

Hence two US-based bodies ASIS International and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) are to meet in Arlington, Virginia. Dr Marc H Siegel, commissioner, ASIS Global Standards Initiative, said beforehand: “Active shooter incidents are unpredictable and evolve rapidly. Violent attacks at gatherings, businesses, and public facilities have significant consequences. It is essential to better prepare for and respond to these types of incidents. The intent of this meeting is to bring together the foremost active shooter experts from across the spectrum of security, fire, and safety in an effort to develop tools for organisations of any size and sector, to best protect human life and physical assets.”

The official CPNI (Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure) suggests (and offers training documents for free download) encouraging employees to be vigilant so that they are more alert to suspicious behaviour and more likely to report it; and ensuring the motivation of security officers or guardforces, so they will be attentive to anyone behaving suspiciously or with hostile intent, and act as a deterrent presence.
