POS deactivation

by Mark Rowe

Checkpoint Systems, Inc the US-based supplier of merchandise availability products for retail has shown the latest additions to its Counterpoint iD (CPiD) point-of-sale (POS) deactivation products for clothing and department stores for loss prevention use.

In addition to the Counterpoint iD-RF electronic article surveillance (EAS) product, Checkpoint is introducing Counterpoint-RFID (CPiD-RFID) and Counterpoint iD Dual (CPiD-Dual) for RFID and dual RF/RFID POS deactivation needs, respectively.

Given retailers’ increasing reliance on RFID for inventory accuracy and loss prevention, the new CPiD solutions address a challenge retailers face in integrating these key business processes with POS transactions, the makers claim. Retailer objectives include streamlining customer transactions at the POS, maintaining inventory accuracy and deactivating RFID labels on purchased merchandise to ensure alarm integrity. With multiple configuration and deactivation options, Checkpoint says that its CPiD family is designed to meet retailers’ needs at POS regardless of their RFID adoption strategy and label formats.

CPiD-RFID enables retailers to process RFID tags at POS for merchandise visibility by triggering reorders/restocking when needed. It also enables RFID-based EAS (electronic article surveillance) by altering label data or by “virtual deactivation,” a process by which the item is identified as sold in the inventory system so that the alarm at the exit door does not sound, although the label itself does not need to be altered. A patented antenna at POS is designed to prevent nearby labels from being read, written, or killed, to reduce stray reads and improve POS accuracy.

CPiD-Dual allows for simultaneous RF-EAS deactivation and RFID processing at the same location, for retailers who are transitioning from traditional EAS to RFID and may be operating some or all of their stores in mixed label use. Both of these new solutions include compact RFID readers as well as a full assortment of deactivation pads for soft labels or hard tags in RFID and dual RF-RFID technologies.

Uwe Sydon, Senior Vice President Innovation and Technology, Merchandise Availability Solutions, Checkpoint Systems, said: “Department stores and specialty apparel retailers face significant price and margin pressures and are constantly looking for ways to improve efficiency, inventory availability and revenue, and they recognise the need for their POS to provide a competitive advantage in each of these areas. Our CPiD family addresses these issues head on, while providing retailers with a practical solution for their migration from traditional EAS to RFID, while at the same time improving the consumer shopping experience.”

The latest additions to its Counterpoint iD (CPiD) point-of-sale (POS) deactivation solutions were shown at the 2015 NRF Annual Convention & EXPO in New York.
