ASIS AGM

by Mark Rowe

The UK chapter of ASIS can look forward to 25th anniversary events in 2018, the AGM in London heard on Friday afternoon, December 8. Reviewing 2017, chapter chairman Dave Clark said that the chapter was doing more on social media; had seen an 11pc growth (in numbers, 100) in membership, including people transitioning from the police nad military; and besides the quarterly meetings in London, seminars and events were held in the regions. The chapter has some 230 members who are certificated – 69 PSPs, 163 CPPs and eight PCIs (Dave a holder of all three). As ASIS UK has its 25th birthday in 2018, as it set up as a national chapter in 1993, the chapter is planning a number of activities. It’s changing its structure too, from a committee to an operating board.

Recruitment consultants and committee vice-chairmen Mike Hurst and Graham Bassett were jointly presented by Dave Clark with the Mervyn David award, a memorial for a past chairman of ASIS UK. It marked the two men’s work for ASIS UK, among other things their generating of sponsorship, attending meetings (about 100 a year between the two of them), their 39 years active in ASIS between them, and introducing in the last few years 200 new members to the security managers’ body. Mike Hurst and Graham Bassett were also presented with individual gifts by ASIS Europe organiser Godfried Hendriks, for their organising of events. Several members received training certificates from Dave Clark, who earlier introduced Lord Carlile’s talk on the Chartered Security Professional (CSyP) qualification (pictured; Lord Carlisle speaking to the AGM audience at Westminster Cathedral hall). University of Greenwich psychologist Dr Josh Davis also spoke, on the work of ‘super recognisers’ at the Met Police, since the 2011 riots. Bruce Baes gave the treasurer’s report.

As past chairman Andy Williams (who was among attenders) stepped down from the committee, new directors voted for or re-elected were: Chris Aldous, Graham Bassett, Caroline Bashford and Mike Hurst.

Worshipful Company of Security Professionals (WCoSP) apprentices and King’s College London (KCL) graduates gave presentations, before drinks and networking into the early evening.
