World Cup control

by Mark Rowe

In the Brazilian capital Brasilia, the Mane Garrincha National Stadium, is hosting seven World Cup games during the Fifa World Cup in June and July 2014. The turnkey project includes more than 4,000 cameras, 150 turnstiles for controlling access at some 6,000 control points and about 6,000 fire detection points.

With a seating capacity of 70,000, the stadium is Brazil’s second largest sports arena . A CCTV system supplied by Siemens can identify spectators around the stadium’s stands. The system delivers password protected hierarchical access control, so that police, fire brigade and private security firms can identify potential incidents and take action.

By integrating the database with ticket sale systems, the access system will enable the site’s operators to promote a variety of events. Turnstiles at the arena’s entry points will be able to read identification technologies such as 1D and 2D barcodes, mifare and smart cards. As the system’s data will be encrypted, the opportunity for ticket forgery is minimised. Operators will not be required to carry keys to open the numerous stadium gates. All the technologies are integrated into a command and control centre.

Siemens adds that its products have already been installed at more than 150 sports stadia worldwide including the Allianz Arena in Munich.
