Towering CCTV for Ryder Cup

by Mark Rowe

At the 2014 Ryder Cup Gleneagles in September, the vacant property management contractor VPS supplied its SmartTower CCTV. The product was in Scotland to secure the television and media compound at the golf course during the event.

The SmartTower is designed for use in remote, vulnerable or temporary sites. It combines an alloy sub frame and pneumatic mast, which allows it to be deployed in any terrain. The top of the tower houses a wireless pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera, with on-board storage capacity of up to 64GB. As it can be powered by AC power, wind, solar or hydrogen fuel cell, the SmartTower can operate even if utilities are not easily available, the firm says.

Anthony Owen, the Managing Director for VPS Site-Security, said: “This is the first time the Ryder Cup in Europe will be broadcast live in its entirety to America, and it’s great to be helping our security partner at one of the major sporting events in the world.”

The SmartTower is used to protect remote or challenging sites, such as building sites, utilities, and critical infrastructure. It was designed by VPS’ Quatro Electronics, at their Lytham St Anne’s workshop, and earlier this month won a New Product of the Year Award from Security Products in the USA, with B & B Electronics, who developed the cellular wireless communication.
