Three years of video for trampoline arena

by Mark Rowe

A case study of an indoor trampoline arena that’s keeping high definition video evidence in case anything arises, up to three years later.

Jump Nation, at Trafford Park in Manchester, offers 139 trampolines which are all connected together to form one huge arena where you can literally bounce off the walls. Matthew Ball, Managing Director of Jump Nation, said: “We want our customers to have maximum enjoyment when using our facilities, but bouncing on trampolines is an inherently dangerous activity and is categorised as an extreme sport. It is therefore very important for all customers to understand the risks and bounce within their own ability. With this in mind, we need a video surveillance system which can verify that customers have complied with our safety rules and if necessary, help us to resolve any claims for injury. As it is legally possible for injury claims to be made up to three years after an incident, it is essential that we are able to store video evidence for the same length of time.”

A contract for a CCTV system went to Selec Systems Ltd, who recommended, and then installed, eight Samsung Techwin SNV-6084R 2MP Full HD network dome cameras, pictured, at key points around the arena. Part of the Samsung Techwin WiseNetIII camera range, the SNV-6084R is vandal-resistant and has built in infra-red LEDs to capture images regardless of the lighting the makers say. It also features enhanced Wide Dynamic Range which with performance greater than 120dB, can accurately produce images in scenes that at the same time contain very bright and very dark areas.

Three of the SNV-6084Rs are able to collectively cover the trampolining area; these images are stored for three years. Alan Atyeo, Technical Manager for Axminster-based Selec Systems, said: “It is an unusual requirement as the specification for most video surveillance systems is for recording to be stored up to 31 days. However, we carefully calculated the storage requirements based on the need to record at ten frames per second, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as the system needs to be used for general security purposes when the arena is closed. We then worked closely with Samsung Techwin’s pre-sales support team to identify that the SRN-4000 network video recorder (NVR) could meet the client’s requirements.”

The Samsung Techwin SRN-4000 NVR as installed at Jump Nation has 11 internal 4TB hard drives which are hot-swappable and support RAID5 and RAID6 recording, to protect against unrecoverable read errors, besides whole HDD failure.

The five other domes have been installed in non-critical areas such as the café and reception areas, and images from these cameras are recorded on a Samsung Techwin SRN-1670 recorder which has been configured to store images from all of the cameras for up to 31 days.

Matthew said: “Since opening our doors in August 2014, we have been very popular with schools and birthday parties, as well as members of the public who want to get fit or just have fun. Safety is the number one priority and we are therefore very pleased to have peace of mind in knowing that our safety policy is being well supported by a highly effective video surveillance solution.”
