Talk after 9-11

by Mark Rowe

Senior psychology lecturer at Bucks New University, Jeffrey DeMarco talked about the ‘war on terror’, brought to our doorsteps on 9-11, at a recent TEDx event.

Using basic social psychological principles, he explored the premise of ‘otherness’ and the importance for a better appreciation of, and respect for, the norms, views and values of others.

Jeffrey outlined how these principles can help us to understand: why did events such as 9/11 happen? What are the state of affairs now? and how can we ameliorate global relations? He identified how mutual understanding can go a long way in both reducing radicalisation and creating strong partnerships in times of humanitarian need and crisis.
