System for shopping development

by Mark Rowe

Friars Walk is the new, £117m retail and leisure development in Newport, South Wales. Besides 30 new shops, the 390,000 sq ft complex, pictured, houses a dozen restaurants, an eight-screen Cineworld multiplex cinema, a 12-lane Superbowl UK, Laser Quest and a Crazy Club soft play, plus a 350 space car park and bus station. The site opened its doors in November 2015, developed by Queensberry Real Estate with Newport City Council. The developers sought a modern and robust fire and access system.

Working with Protectorcomms, a local installer, distribution company Oprema supplied a fully addressable fire alarm system plus networked access control. This system was designed to take into account the large number of people who use Friars Walk regularly for shopping, dining and leisure. Keeping to strict deadlines, the security distributor supplied an integrated fire and access system.

Damian O’Brien, Managing Director, Protectorcomms said: “Friars Walk shopping centre and leisure complex plays host to shops, eateries, a cinema and much more. When the facility’s security measures needed addressing, we were very happy to be involved. With the help of Oprema, we provided a modern and robust fire and access system to protect both people and property at this busy site. The relationship we have with Oprema, our preferred distribution partner, and the added value services they offer allows us to exceed our customer’s expectations on every project, providing the latest design expertise, technical support and the best fit-for-purpose products at competitive prices.”

And Gareth Williams, Sales Director, Oprema Ltd, said: “We love being approached with new and challenging projects, so when Protectorcomms invited us to work with them on the new Friars Walk development, we knew we had to be involved. This project is an excellent example of our teams working together to deliver the best possible integrated fie and access solutions at the best possible cost, resulting in a safe and secure environment for shoppers, staff and assets and a happy end user.”
