SIA CCTV op

by Mark Rowe

Unlicensed directors and CCTV operatives were found working illegally on Monday, January 28 when Security Industry Authority (SIA) investigators, acting on intelligence, targeted several CCTV businesses operating across northern England.

During Operation Corvus eight CCTV premises in Brighouse, Darwen, Huddersfield, Leeds, Rochdale, Southport and Stockport were visited. In Darwen, two unlicensed CCTV operators and an unlicensed director were found. Checks later revealed another four unlicensed directors.

In Brighouse, one site was found to be operating with an unlicensed director. The director was not on the premises at the time but he will be interviewed at a later date.

A London-based company, which has a CCTV control room in Leeds, had no staff on the premises at the time of Monday’s visit. However, enquires suggest that the business may be employing a number of unlicensed individuals.

The SIA says that it will continue with their line of enquiries regarding all the offences found, which may result in prosecutions.

SIA Head of Investigation, Neil Diamond said: “Operation Corvus was unusual as we targeted businesses and their employees. I am disappointed that we found such high levels of unlicensed personnel, which is unacceptable.

“Security staff can help to maintain public safety in our towns and cities. We need operatives and those deploying them to be trained, professional and SIA-licensed. Illegal working will not be tolerated.”
