Rutland wireless

by Mark Rowe

Oakham Council has gone wireless for the town of Oakham’s new town-wide, high-definition surveillance system.

Oakham, in Rutland, required an infrastructure that could take the bandwidth of the town’s new capacity-heavy video system that includes several HD video cameras around the town centre. With assistance from installers Trellisworks Limited and Quadrant Security Group, the council chose Siklu’s EtherHaul-500TX millimeter wave radio for aggregation of camera data that is transmitted to the video management system and network video recorders (NVRs).

Nick Metcalfe, Technical Sales at Newbury-based Trellisworks, which designed and commissioned the system, said: “A standard 5GHz frequency wireless link is no longer sufficient for moving the bandwidth-heavy data generated by several high definition cameras across a wireless network like Oakham’s. For Oakham, the high-capacity 60GHz Siklu solution was critical to the success of the new surveillance network because it provides the speed and reliability needed at a much lower cost than renting a telco fiber connection, and with an installation time of only 30 minutes.”

The link used by the town connects a range of Axis Communications and Redvision cameras with a video management system and several network video recorders from Milestone Systems, which have been deployed throughout Oakham to monitor streets and town’s council facilities. According to the product company the system maintains interference-free carrier-grade 99.999 per cent availability and town officials anticipate a return on investment (ROI) within the next two to three years.

Zeev Farkash, VP of Global Sales at Siklu, said: “It is gratifying for Siklu to provide an easily-deployed solution for towns such as Oakham that seek the security afforded by HD quality video surveillance, but for whom the availability or cost of fiber is prohibitive. Oakham is one of many UK towns that have adopted Siklu millimeter wave for their surveillance networks.”

And Adrian Wheeler, Sales Manager at ISP UK Broadband, said: “Near perfect reliability and connectivity is a requirement for Oakham, as is a solution that can withstand the fog and rain. It’s a testament to the durability and scalability of the solutions that we offer that we can meet all of their needs.”

The Siklu EtherHaul mmW products will be showcased at the Security Essen trade fair in Essen, Germany, from September 27 to 30, on stands 2B22 and 2A22 as part of the Milestone and Allnet partner pavilions.
