The crime reporting line Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to £2,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person/s responsible for the theft of a metal container belonging to a branch of the Royal British Legion in Salford.

The 20ft (6m) container was used to store memorabilia, as well as 30 collecting tins and thousands of poppies, which were stolen from the Salford branch that closed in July. The theft, which occurred outside the premises in Robert Hall Street, was discovered on Tuesday morning, August 28, by the club chairman.

The container, which had 91 years of items inside it, also stored poppy crosses, appeal wristbands, high visibility jackets, British Legion and union jack flags and war memorial plaques. The charity Crimestoppers is offering the reward of up to £2,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person/s responsible for this crime.

Chairman of Crimestoppers, Lord Ashcroft, said: “This is a hugely disrespectful and heartless crime that has robbed a Royal British Legion Club of its history.

“The people responsible for this theft should not be allowed to get away with this crime and must be brought to justice. I am appealing to anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers anonymously and ensure that these individuals cannot reoffend or cause anyone else distress.”
